Holistic approach will ensure email security
18 July 2005
As the rate of criminal involvement in the online world accelerates, there is increased pressure on businesses to embrace a holistic approach to email security.
Globally, one in 32 emails sent in May 2005 contained some form of virus or trojan attack, posing a significant risk to a business’ data and operating capacity.
This figure was up 33% on the figures for April 2005.
CITEC, together with its chosen email security partner MessageLabs, offers customers a portfolio of email screening solutions to mitigate the risks posed by this trend.
According to CITEC’s Security Solutions Consultant, Greg Smith, CITEC’s email screening service is highly competitive and offers significant advantages.
“As a MessageLabs Silver Partner, CITEC receives all the core benefits of the program, which we pass on to customers to ensure competitive pricing and highly scalable support,” Greg said.
“By using MessageLabs’ Skeptic Predictive technology, potentially malicious code and risks found on the Internet - such as viruses, unsolicited email and sensitive content, can be identified and acted upon before a customer’s network boundaries are threatened.”
In a recent example of threats to email security from May 2005, two computer consultants were arrested in London, alleged to have developed software to steal a company’s corporate information. Disguising the virus as a business proposal in an email attachment, the software was targeted at well-known businesses in order to monitor their activities and secrets.
In a similar case, in the first few hours of a Trojan downloader, MessageLabs halted 70,000 copies. After the initial 24 hours, a total of 850,000 emails were intercepted.
MessageLabs is the the leading provider of email security and management services to businesses world-wide. For CITEC customers, this means a thorough email screening process which Greg Smith describes as expert.
“The highly effective risk mitigation offered by CITEC would be difficult to obtain without the specialist security knowledge and experience inherent in our email screening service,” he said.
The technology’s connection management uses two primary techniques to verify the legitimacy of email.
An SMTP Validation identifies email from known spam and virus sources. Secondly, a User Validation decreases the volume of emails for registered domains by discarding connections regarded as invalid.
Globally, MessageLabs scans over 14 million emails a day with no noticeable impact on delivery times.
Customers interested in this email technology can take advantage of a free, 30 day no obligation trial. The screening solution will be activated for 30 days, during which time the customer can view progressive results.
